West Baltimore: Sandtown – Winchester
Sandtown is a vibrant West Baltimore community bordered by historic Pennsylvania Avenue and the burgeoning Innovation Village district between Maryland Institute College of Art and Coppin State University. The majority of Habitat homes in Sandtown are what we call “gut rehabs” – historic rowhouses from the early 20th century that have been fully renovated to new, high-quality construction. South Baltimore: Pigtown
Pigtown is a historically working class neighborhood in South Baltimore, so named for the pigs that were once shuttled through the streets from the B & O railroad to local butcher shops. Today, Pigtown is a diverse community with a bustling main street full of locally-owned restaurants, and easy access to downtown Baltimore, as well as major highways and public transportation to Washington DC.
Since 2007, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake has renovated 23 existing homes and constructed 18 new homes in Pigtown. Much of this work has centered on the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Ward Street. There are currently five homes in progress that will consist of new construction and full rehabs. For more on our work in Pigtown, click here.
