Habitat Chesapeake Welcomes Third Class of HabiCorps Workforce Development Program!

This September, we’re welcoming the third class of our HabiCorps Workforce Development Program – a 10.5 month training program that provides hands-on instruction in everything from demolition and deconstruction to fine carpentry and flooring. Trainees learn while building Habitat homes and many come to the program facing significant barriers to full-time employment, such as lack of stable housing or a driver’s license. HabiCorps gives them an opportunity to address these issues, while earning an AmeriCorps stipend, healthcare and deep experience in the growing construction industry. The 2018-19 trainees began their session just after the Labor Day holiday and are now in the orientation phase of the program. The next ten months will be filled with intensive construction tutorials, resume writing and interview skill workshops and ultimately job placement assistance following successful completion of the program. We are proud to report that past HabiCorps graduates are currently working as training program supervisors, electrical and HVAC apprentices and concrete masons among others – all well-paying jobs that are setting them up for a lifetime of success and stability.

HabiCorps is a special program because of its 360-degree impact. Not only do trainees spend 10.5 months gaining a deep experience in carpentry and construction management but they are building brighter futures for Habitat partner families and communities across Baltimore. With HabiCorps’ help, crumbling structures are rebuilt into beautiful, safe homes where families can thrive. Neighborhoods that have been neglected for years come alive with investment and opportunity. This is the power of HabiCorps!
