Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake unites with The Johns Hopkins Hospital and United Way Launching Construction of the Hopkins Hospital – Habitat House in East Baltimore

(BALTIMORE, MD) – Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake (Habitat Chesapeake) will be safely celebrating the start of a new community development project in East Baltimore.  The project is being undertaken in cooperation with The Johns Hopkins Hospital and United Way of Central Maryland.

The project launch represents the re-start of construction volunteers on Friday, September 4 in a home sponsored in part by members of the executive team of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  The project launch will be streamed on Facebook Live on Friday at 10:30am on Habitat Chesapeake’s official Facebook page, www.facebook.com/habitatchesapeake . Intensive safety practices are being utilized to sustain Habitat’s mission and engage volunteers in service.

The home is located at 2542 East Eager Street, in the East Baltimore neighborhood of Milton-Montford.  It is one of up to 16 units Habitat Chesapeake plans to rehab in the Milton-Montford neighborhood, east of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Habitat Chesapeake’s work in this community will be one of three areas of emphasis in the coming years.  Other areas of focus include Belair-Edison, and new homes in Orchard Ridge, located in Northeast Baltimore.

A group of executives and staff from Johns Hopkins will be working on the home’s reconstruction. The project launch will be led by the Habitat Chesapeake’s construction staff and the HabiCorps Workforce Development Program Trainees.

Over the past few months, Habitat Chesapeake has been diligently preparing to safely resume build and volunteer activities to ensure all participants are safe. This is Habitat Chesapeake’s first construction volunteer event since Maryland has been under Covid-19 regulations. The new safety protocol and procedures for this event and for future events include temperature checks, face masks, frequent sanitation and social distancing.
