Celebrating Habitat Chesapeake’s 45 Years & Habitat for Humanity’s 50 Years of Impact

Habitat for Humanity was founded in Plains, Georgia in 1976 with a simple but powerful vision: that everyone deserves a decent place to live. Five years later, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake was established to bring that vision to life for individuals and families across Central Maryland.

Today, Habitat Chesapeake serves Baltimore City, as well as Anne Arundel, Howard, and Baltimore counties, as part of a global network of more than 1,000 Habitat organizations in the U.S. and 60+ countries. Together, we help hundreds of thousands of people each year access affordable homeownership, financial stability, and stronger futures.

Opening the Door to Affordable Homeownership

At the heart of Habitat Chesapeake’s mission is a simple belief: everyone deserves a decent place to live. Through our homeownership program, we partner with hardworking individuals and families to make affordable homeownership possible, with most of our homes located in Baltimore City and additional homes throughout Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Howard counties.

Habitat homeownership is built on partnership. Future homeowners invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity, working alongside volunteers, staff, and neighbors to build their homes and the homes of other families. They also participate in financial education, budgeting, and home maintenance training to prepare for long-term success.

Together, we’re not just building homes, we’re opening doors to stability, opportunity, and a stronger future.

Home sponsorship directly offsets construction costs for new and rehabilitated homes. Levels range from $2,500 to $50,000, with major anniversary sponsorships available at $50,000 per home.

Help Close the Affordability Gaps

Bridge the Cost Between Construction and True Affordability

Habitat homeowners earn between 30–80% of the area median income. We cap mortgage payments at no more than 30% of their income, ensuring long-term stability. This creates an affordability gap, the difference between the real cost of a home and what a homeowner can sustainably pay.

Fund Future Property Acquisitions

Support the Anniversary Acquisition Fund

One of our greatest challenges is securing enough land and properties to keep building.

The Anniversary Acquisition Fund will create a $1 million revolving fund dedicated solely to acquiring new properties. As homes are completed and purchased by qualified homebuyers, the fund is replenished, allowing Habitat to build again and again.
